101 Freeway Wildlife Crossing Nears Completion

The Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing over the 101 Freeway in Agoura Hills is entering its final construction phase. This project, which started in 2022, aims to create a safe passage for wildlife, including mountain lions and mule deer, to cross the busy freeway. The final stage involves extending the crossing over Agoura Road and connecting it to surrounding natural habitats.

The crossing, touted as the world’s largest urban wildlife bridge, is designed to reconnect the Santa Monica Mountains to other regions, potentially saving isolated animal populations from extinction. The project includes a 210-foot-long vegetated bridge, which will feature native plants to mimic the natural environment. According to the Los Angeles Times, the final phase involves complex tasks such as relocating utilities and stabilizing an underground creek.

Beth Pratt, California executive director for the National Wildlife Federation, described the project as an “almost impossible” dream that is now nearing completion. Governor Gavin Newsom praised the crossing as a “cutting-edge model” for urban wildlife conservation. The crossing aims to reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions and enhance genetic diversity among local species.

The project, estimated to cost around $92.6 million, is funded by a mix of public funds and private donations. Despite recent tariffs increasing costs, the team continues to manage expenses. Construction is expected to conclude by the end of 2026, with planting of native vegetation scheduled for this fall.
