The Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the theft of 100,000 organic eggs from Pete & Gerry’s Organics in Greencastle. The eggs, valued at $40,000, were stolen from a distribution trailer on Saturday (February 1) around 8:40 p.m. The incident has left authorities searching for suspects.
A spokesperson for Pete & Gerry’s stated that the company is working with law enforcement to resolve the matter.
“Pete & Gerry’s is aware of a recent incident in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and we are actively working with local law enforcement to investigate,” the company said in a statement. “We take this matter seriously and are committed to resolving it as quickly as possible. Due to the ongoing investigation we cannot comment any further on this matter.”
The investigation remains active, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Pennsylvania State Police Chambersburg at 717-264-5161.
As the investigation continues, the impact of the theft is compounded by the ongoing egg price surge, which is due in part to bird flu outbreaks, which have led to the slaughter of millions of chickens across the country. This has tightened egg supplies and increased prices, with the average cost of a dozen eggs reaching $4.15 in December 2024.
In response to the rising prices, some businesses, like Waffle House, have added surcharges to egg orders. With Easter approaching, demand and prices are expected to rise further.
