1-Year-Old Dies in Hot Car While Mom Gets Cosmetic Procedure

In Porterville, a one-year-old boy, Amillio Gutierrez, died after being left in a hot car by his mother, Maya Hernandez, while she attended a cosmetic procedure on Sunday. According to police reports, Hernandez left her two young sons, Amillio and his two-year-old brother, in the car for nearly two hours outside a med spa. Despite setting the air conditioning to 60 degrees, the car automatically shut off after one hour, leaving the children in sweltering heat.

Court documents reveal that Amillio’s body temperature reached 107 degrees when he was hospitalized, and he was pronounced dead after 40 minutes of resuscitation efforts. His two-year-old brother survived with a temperature of 99 degrees, as older children can regulate their body temperature better than infants.

Hernandez, 20, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and two counts of child cruelty. She pleaded not guilty and is currently held on over $1 million bail. She is due back in court on July 11.
