LOS ANGELES (CNS) – A short vehicle pursuit of a felony suspect that originated in the downtown Los Angeles area ended in a crash and apparent police shooting on an East Los Angeles freeway off-ramp Wednesday, leaving the driver dead and passenger in custody.
The pursuit began at 9:48 a.m. Wednesday by officers from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Central Station, according to an LAPD’s Media Relations spokeswoman, who said no other details were immediately available.
The chase ended with a crash involving the suspect and an LAPD SUV on the Olympic Boulevard off-ramp from the southbound Golden State (5) Freeway in the East Los Angeles area. Reports from the scene indicated that police opened fire on the suspect. Bullet holes were visible on the suspect vehicle.
Video from the scene showed a suspect crawling out of the front passenger-side window of the dark-colored BMW and falling to the ground. Officers moved in and took the apparently injured person into custody, and he was then treated by waiting paramedics. His condition was not immediately known.
The driver also managed to exit the vehicle and was seen lying on the ground on the driver’s side of the car. Police eventually moved in and pulled the driver away from the vehicle. Paramedics tended to the suspect, but pronounced the person dead at the scene. The body was covered with a sheet as police continued the investigation.
