More than 17 pounds of liquid methamphetamine, with an estimated street value of $1.8 million, were discovered hidden in dog shampoo bottles at LAX earlier this month. The shipment was destined for Australia, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials.
The discovery was made on April 1 by officers from LAX’s Outbound Enforcement Team, who were conducting an examination of an outbound cargo shipment labeled as “Assorted Dog Shampoos.” Inside, they found 12 plastic bottles filled with a crystalized white substance that tested positive for methamphetamine.
CBP Director of Field Operations in Los Angeles Cheryl M. Davies highlighted the importance of the interception, stating, “This interception highlights CBP’s critical outbound mission in detecting, intercepting, and seizing potent narcotics heading out of the United States.”
Australia, where the shipment was headed, has a significant methamphetamine issue, with about 1.6 million people, or 7.5% of the population, having used the drug in their lifetime. The CBP’s efforts are part of a broader mission to combat drug trafficking, with over 64,000 pounds of methamphetamine intercepted since the beginning of fiscal year 2025.
KTLA reported that the CBP’s vigilance and commitment to disrupting transnational drug trafficking are crucial in preventing such illegal exports.
